ITA00189 F-117A "Stealth" Nighthawk

The Lockheed F-117A Nighthawk is the result of a long and very secret development program dating back to the early 1970’s. Numerous attempts and tests were conducted to see if an aircraft could be designed to hide from radar observation. The Lockheed U-2 had radar absorging paint; the Lockheed SR-71 had both radar foiling shaping and radar absorbing paint. The production F-117A made its first flight on 15 October 1982 from the remote flight test facility at Groom Lake, Nevada. The aircraft is a special mission fighter bomber fully capable of performing in total darkness.

ITA00216 Kfz 305 Opel Blitz

Actually, this truck - OPEL without BLITZ - was manufactured for commercial use featuring more or less the same characteristics.

The Opel Blitz was to proliferate into a number of variants, such as ambulance, tank-truck, command vehiclie, repair wagon, thus modellers can give free play to their fancy.

The A-7 Corsair was adopted by American air forces at the end of the 60s after this rather clumsy-looking yet imposing aircraft had done sterling service with the US Navy, which used it extensively during the Vietnam war from 1966 onwards. The «land» version of the A-7 is characterised by advanced navigation electronics and precise attack capability thanks to its wide range for weapons. It remained in service with the National Air Guard and the Reserve up to the 90’s, when it was replaced by the F-16.

ITA01248 Merlin HMA. 1

Jointly developed/built by Agusta and Westland, the EH.101 is undoubtedly today’s most advanced medium helicopter. Powered by three General Electric CT7-6 or Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322 turbines (each fuelled by its own self-sealing tank), it features a main 5-blade rotor made of composite material that, thanks to a special anti-vibration system, ensures extremely silent running. Five nations (United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, Denmark and Portugal) have chosen the EH.101. Collaboration with Lockheed-Martin has also led to the founding of Team US101, which aims to enter this machine in the tender for the new US Presidential helicopter.

ITA01252 Wellington Mk. X

Of the more than 11,000 Vickers Wellington built, a full third were the MkX version. Characterised by Bristol Hercules VI or XVI engines, these planes began to pour into the Royal Air Force units in the latter part of 1942, and just a few months later twelve squadrons of the Bomber Command were partially or entirely equipped with them. The Wellington MkX was progressively replaced by four-engined bombers, but in any case it had a long lifetime. It spawned several sub-versions, in particular the anti-submarine, also supplied to Allied countries after the end of WWII. The last one was retired by the RAF only in 1953.

The victory of the US101 consortium (composed of Lockheed-Martin, Agusta Westland and Bell Helicopter Textron) in the VXX contest, announced in January 2005, was certainly fantastic. The fact that the US Marine Corps have selected a European product to replace their VH-3D in the role of “Marine one”, i.e. the helicopter that transports the President of the United States, is unprecedented. The initial operational capacity of this version of EH-101 is expected for the year 2009.

ITA01274 A-26 A/B INVADER

The Douglas A-26 entered the Second World War at a relatively late date: the first eighteen examples were, in fact, sent to the European front in the summer of 1944. However, shortly afterwards, the Invader demonstrated its worth, and on the cease fire the troops equipped with these planes had flown more than 11,000 missions. Also in the Pacific, in only a few months, the Invader consolidated its fame as the crew’s favourite bomber. After a short period of time, the A-26 found itself fighting again in Vietnam. It then became the average standard bomber of the USAF used in the War in Korea. It was in this conflict that the A-26C variant was more widely used; characterised by P&W R-2800-27 engines and a glass nose, which contained the Norden bombsight. Many examples were successively supplied to smaller air forces, which kept them in service until the middle of the 70’s.

This small, manageable trainer, used by pilots to make the switch from propeller aircraft to jets, was built for the Italian air force in the late 50s/early 60s. Simple and tough, extremely manageable and easy to fly, it soon became one of the Italian aeronautical industry’s “best sellers”, enjoying considerable export success. Several versions of the MB 326 saw service with the Australian and South African air forces. There, as in Italy, it has only recently been replaced by more modern aircraft.

ITA02658 P-40M/N - Kittyhawk Mk. IV

The last development of the "Hawk" series produced by Curtiss from the ‘30s, the P-40 was certainly one of the most significant fighter aircrafts of the first part of the Second World War. Depending on the versions, it had a Packard Merlin or an Allison V-1710 motor. It demonstrated efficiency against the oldest enemy fighters, but showed serious limitations against the aircrafts which came into service in 1942. It was progressively declassed to the fighter-bomber role, in which it continued to obtain good results until the end of the conflict. In total, there were about 14,000 exemplars built.
