HASEGAWA 00232 F-16C FIGHTING FALCON
The F-16 started rather inauspiciously as a technology demonstrator to see to what degree it would be possible to build a useful fighter that was significantly smaller and cheaper than the F-15 Eagle. The US Air Force (USAF) termed this the lightweight fighter programme and it was not originally intended to lead to a production aircraft, although this was overtaken by the existence of a large export market, initially in Europe. General Dynamics, Boeing, LTV, Lockheed and Northrop all submitted proposals, with General Dynamics and Northrop being awarded contracts for two prototypes each. After extensive fly-offs, General Dynamics' YF-16 was chosen over Northrop's YF-17 (which would later become the US Navy's F-18).

HASEGAWA 00239 A-4E/F SKYHAWK
First appearing in the mid-1950's, the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk was an unusually small attack jet for its time. Sometimes called the "Scooter," the A-4's dimunitive size and agility helped many pilots survive the hazards of combat in the skies over Southeast Asia.

HASEGAWA 00331 F-4EJ PHANTOM II
The F-4 Phantom II is arguably the most significant warplane every produced through the 1960's and there are many reviews and other articles which documents its history very well, which I won't go into here. Suffice to say though the original Phantom designed by McDonnell who were approached by the US Navy to develop a plane was subsequently used as a shipborne fighter for a short period until the Navy wanted something a bit better. McDonnell's only ever single engined fighter was then produced, the F3H Demon which unfortunately did not live up to expectations and was outgunned, so it were, by the F-8 Crusader. In spite of this set back McDonnell went on to produce a two seated, twin engined version of the Demon with a few other cosmetic changes of course, which became the F4H-1 Phantom II. It was embraced by the US Navy and broke a number of records, along with demonstrating outstanding performance that had other US Armed Force departments having a closer look. Not bad for a company that had not previously built planes before the original Phantom (only parts for planes).

HASEGAWA 00336 F-15C EAGLE 1/72
As a fighter, the F-15 is hard to beat. Two powerful Pratt & Whitney turbofans push the big fighter skyward at two and a half times the speed of sound, and it can reach its normal operating ceiling of 59,000 feet in only two min.
In a fight, the Eagle's primary weapons are its four AMRAAM Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles, which can destroy targets at up to 45 miles, well beyond visual range. The fighter aslo carries four AIM-9 Sidewinder heat-seeking missiles and a superfast-firing M61 Vulcan 20-mm cannon for close-quarter combat.
The Eagle can turn tightly and make abrupt maneuvers that would never have remotely possible in its predecessors. All-round pilot view from the high-set cockpit is superb, thanks to the large bubble canopy.
In spite of rivals to its position the F-15 remains the most successful air superiority fighter in service. Nearly 100 enemy aircraft have fallen to the F-15s, but no Eagle has ever been lost in aerial combat. It is an amazing record, which the big McDonnell Douglas fighter will carry on the front line well into the 21st century.
